Day 3

Rosthwaite to Grasmere

Grasmere. Home of the poet Wordsworth. But don't expect any poetry from me. I hope Will and Kate's wedding went off well. We saw some of the news coverage and Kate certainly looked stunning. We're not too sure about Will's choice of dress though.

Grasmere is teeming with holiday-makers up for the bank holiday weekend. We are staying in the Youth Hostel (we couldn't get in anywhere else) which is surprisingly well appointed. It is certainly not what Liz and I remember from our youth hostelling days back in the 1960s. Back then you had to help with the chores. Nowadays, somebody does it for you, and to top it all the "restaurant" has a menu and serves beers, wines and spirits. Furthermore, the word "youth" is misplaced, - there seem to be more over 30s staying here than under 30s.

You will all have wondered what happened to yesterday's blog, but Yew Tree Farm in Rosthwaite had no facilities for me to access the internet and provide you all with an update. Anyway, I wrote it offline and it is published below.

Today we walked up the Stonethwaite valley right to the top (600m), across Greenup Edge and traversed the top of the Wythburn valley before descending to Grasmere down Easedale.

We met an Aussie who had flown for the famous Squadron 75 of the RAAF (check out their WW2 history) who is walking the path with his wife. We bumped into a German couple that we had met in Ennerdale Bridge and again in the pub in Rosthwaite last night. It seems we are destined to keep meeting with familiar faces on this walk.

As we descended into Grasmere we met a group of 5 people walking together, one of whom was stood on a stepping stone in the river taking a photo of the other four standing on the footbridge. Liz offered to take a photo of all five of them together, which they gratefully accepted. I had visions of Liz falling in the water and ending up with a bill for a very expensive camera. Luckily she didn't.

Distance walked today was 8.17 miles. Total distance walked so far is 36.64 miles. Tomorrow Patterdale and (maybe) St. Sunday Crag if we're feeling energetic.

Now I have found how to connect from my office in Shanghai - I have to go through a european server. They must suspect you could be another naughtly blogger preaching human rights and democracy!
