Day 11

Reeth to Richmond

Well we finally had some decent rain today. The morning stayed dry, but we could feel dampness in the air whilst we ate our lunch and soon after it rained quite hard for a couple of hours. It stopped as soon as we reached our destination, Richmond.

We had a fitful night at Cambridge House, Reeth. There was a terrific thunderstorm with lightning all around the hills. We could clearly hear heavy snoring from one of the guys in the room below. We could also hear them talking before 6 am.

We both had eggs for breakfast - we have got fed up with a fry-up every morning and wanted a change! Over breakfast, we learnt from the landlord that there was a lot of mixamatosis in the valley, which accounts for a lot of the dead rabbits.

We left just as the Sherpa van arrived to collect our luggage. Mr & Mrs Salisbury were in the village shop when we stopped by to buy our lunch. We also said good morning to Mr & Mrs Dodgy as we set out (He: Dodgy ankle. She: Dodgy knee).

We caught up with the aussies in Marrick village and were hoping, like them, to stop at Elaine's Country Kitchen for morning coffee. Unfortunately it was closed. We don't know why. We had our own coffee by a stream a little further on.

We took lunch on a bench by the bus stop in the middle of Marske village. Whilst we sat there I counted 20 other coast-to-coasters walking past. This walk is proving very popular.

When we arrived in Richmond, the main tea shop was full so we had to take tea in the local French restaurant. On leaving we booked a table for this evening. We have our old room (room 7) at The Old Brewery Guest House, which we like.

I am sat here writing this and watching the Mumbai Indians take apart the Delhi Daredevils bowling attack on ITV4. Liz is doing the washing!

We are both in excellent spirits looking forward now to crossing the Vale of York and the North Yorkshire Moors.

Distance walked today (on the GPS) 10.60 miles. Total distance walked to date 116.60.miles.

  1. Am getting a bit concerned. You have started calling people around you 'dodgy', you have a photo of you trying to destroy a cairn (which after yesterday's photo.....). Now you are bragging about getting Grandma to do the washing while you watch the sport....

    Enjoy your day off.
