A whole day's walking with no hills to speak of. We are crossing the Vale of York from Richmond to Ingleby Cross. We have stopped for the night, just over halfway across, at Danby Wiske and will complete the crossing tomorrow.
The weather forecast showed showers but we haven't really had any rain to speak of. There has been lots of sunshine and we have had a good days walking accompanied by our australian friends.
Breakfast this morning at The Old Brewery was just as chaotic as yesterday. They have switched off the heating so we had damp towels and some damp washing that we were hoping would dry out before we left. It was disappointing that they didn't service the room on our rest day.
Over breakfast we talked to a Portuguese guy, from Madeira, who is walking the Coast-to-Coast for the second time. On our way out of Richmond, we passed one walker who was heading back the other way to return his room key! We soon caught up with the australian couple whom we have met several times and walked with them for the rest of the way. The woodlands alongside the River Swale were carpeted with Ramsons.
We stopped for a fine cup of coffee just after crossing under the A1, at the Bridge House Hotel at Catterick Bridge beside Catterick racecourse.
At Bolton-on-Swale we visited the church and the memorial to Henry Jenkins who is reputed to have died at the age of 169! We had lunch in the graveyard.
Wainright didn't like this section because it is flat. We don't mind the flatness but there is a lot of road walking. However, at one point we did cross some fields with a series of 11 stiles in quick succession.
We reached our destination at around 3pm. Refreshments were available in The White Swan and we had a beer each before saying goodbye to the aussies who were staying the night at Lovesome Hill Farm, another mile or so further on.
We have checked in to the Old School B&B for the night and were greeted with a welcoming cup of tea and hot-cross bun with slices of red leicester cheese. We have a room on the ground floor. There are three other coast-to-coasters staying upstairs.
Distance walked today (on the GPS) 13.66 miles. Total distance walked to date 130.26 miles.
