Day 14

Danby Wiske to Ingleby Cross

Today was another very easy day. Only 9 miles across flat farmland. We are staying in Ingleby Arncliffe at the foot of the westernmost slopes of the North Yorkshire Moors which we shall climb tomorrow.

Our stay in Danby Wiske was delightful. The Old School House B&B was very comfortable and Frank and Doreen couldn't do enough to make sure we all enjoyed ourselves. Dinner last night in the White Swan was also excellent. Liz had a chicken dish and I had sausage and mash. We also got to know some of our new travelling companions. There is the jordie from Birmingham, a young couple from Norfolk, who all stayed with us at the Old School House. And there is Mary from Michigan who was staying on her own round the corner. There is also Peter and his wife who we first met in Richmond. Peter is walking, his wife is not. She drops him off at the beginning of each day, meets him for lunch and then picks him up at the end of the day and takes him to wherever they are staying. Last night they stayed in Richmond.

Tonight we are staying at Somerset House Farm, right next to the A19, with the young couple from Norfolk. The jordie from Brum is staying at The Monks House. Peter and his wife are staying at the pub. Mary has gone on to Osmotherley.

We had dinner at The Blue Bell in Ingleby Cross with the jordie. Liz had a very nice fillet steak for only £10. I had a massive gammon steak - and I mean massive - also for only £10. When we had finished dinner, Peter and his wife joined us for a chat.

The walk today was a bit boring. Flat, on fields, tracks and roads. The major interest was getting closer and closer to the North Yorkshire Moors. I almost got flattened crossing the A19 which is a very busy trunk route.

We arrived in Ingleby Arncliffe around 13:00 and had lunch on a bench by the 1915 water tower. Whilst there, we briefly met our australian companions from yesterday who are staying in Osmotherley tonight. After lunch, we had a beer in the Blue Bell pub and at around 1430, headed off to find our B&B. Unfortunately there was nobody around to let us in so we had to go back to the pub for another drink before we could get in.

Distance walked today (on the GPS) 9.08 miles. Total distance walked to date 139.34 miles.

  2. No. Just a farm we passed on the way. I thought the colour mixture made it interesting. What do you think?
