Day 17

High Blakey to Littlebeck

After a lovely night in our palatial B&B, we had a good breakfast, said farewell to our Australian friends, who are taking one day longer than us to walk the last 30 miles, and headed off across Blakey Ridge.

After several miles of fairly easy walking we arrived in Glaisdale at lunchtime and had a panini in a cafe in the basement of the Arncliffe Arms.

The next section of the walk along the Esk valley from Glaisdale to Grosmont was absolutely beautiful. East Arncliffe Woods were delightful, Egton Bridge charming and Grosmont fascinating. As luck would have it, the Yorkshire Coast Express - a steam engine running from Whitby to Pickering - came through just as we arrived.

We had tea in Grosmont but were the only customers in the tea rooms. Then we had a long 800 foot climb up onto Sleights Moor before dropping back down again to our B&B at Intake Farm, Littlebeck. On the way down, we had to negotiate a bull standing by the gate we wanted to go through to get to the farm! Luckily he was no trouble. He was more interested in the cows in the next field.

We have another australian couple from Cairns staying with us, together with a chap who runs marathons (he did the London one this April before doing the Coast-to-Coast!) and a young lad who is camping outside with his dog.

Tomorrow is our last stage. Only 12 more miles to go. Typical Wainright - we have a 4-mile walk up and down the cliffs before we actually get to Robin Hood's Bay and dip our boots in the North Sea.

Distance walked today (on the GPS) 17.52 miles. Total distance walked to date 178.93 miles.
