Day 12

Rest day in Richmond

We had a lovely meal in the Richmond French restaurant last night. We also visited the Black Lion to say goodbye to the Dartmouths and the Salisburys who were carrying on walking today.

Breakfast at The Old Brewery was a completely different matter. They had some new staff who didn't really know how to provide good service. The order for our cooked breakfast wasn't taken until after we had finished our cereal. Liz's scrambled egg and smoked salmon was made with fresh salmon. Then we had to wait ages for our toast. At another table (the farmer's wives) both ordered the same but only one turned up. It was a good job we weren't in a hurry.

After picking up the car we headed west back up Swaledale and had coffee in Reeth. Continuing up the valley we reached Muker and stopped at the Swaledale Woollens shop - visited by Charles and Camilla in 2004 - where Liz bought a scarf.

We drove up over the moors into Wensleydale, arriving in Hawes and drove down the valley to Masham. We had an excellent roast beef lunch at the Black Sheep brewery - accompanied by a pint of their best bitter - before taking an exclusive tour of the brewery and a tasting of their ales. The tour was excellent as Liz and I were the only ones booked on the 2pm tour, so we had exclusive attention from our guide.

We ended up having tea in Richmond after a stroll in the sun down by the river. The waterfalls looked better after a night of heavy rain.

We were very impressed with Sherpa for the support they gave us collecting and returning the car from/to their secure parking. It was all done without a murmur and with a smile on their faces.
